Volunteers Needed for Scholastic Book Fair, May is Mental Health Awareness Month

It was so great to have so many families come through the library on the Celebration of Learning night last week!  It was so fun to have you all making bookmarks, using the selfie station, checking out extra books, and just reading and relaxing together!  The library is such an important part of our school community- thank you for coming by!

I am excited that we will be able to host an in-person book fair for the students the week of May 30!  I will need a couple of volunteers to help out with sales.  Email me at l.baillargeon@hh-cs.org if you might be able to help!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!  This year at school I started a permanent rotating display of social-emotional books in the library for the students to easily find.  It is so important for us to talk about these issues with our kids and to support them in mental health.  I hope these resources will be helpful.

Earth Day, and Upcoming Celebration of Learning Night

Earth Day was on Friday!  It’s very exciting around school these days as our classes get ready for the Celebration of Learning night on May 5.  Quite a few classes are working on projects that have to do with the environment.  We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been learning this year!  Make sure to stop by the library that night too- I am planning to have some book-related selfie props for you to take some pictures with your family in the library, as well as some DIY bookmark-making materials- lots of fun!

I am launching a new version of the HHCS Honours Reader program!  Some of you might remember this program from a few years ago.  The new program will replace the format of the old one. It will have categories to work on such as classics and modern classics, various genres, and diverse books. Students who complete this challenge before they graduate will receive a special HHCS seal. If you like reading, would like to learn more about the world around you, and would like to earn an HHCS seal for your efforts, then go to Google Classroom and click on the plus+ sign button on the top right to add a class and enter this code  qru34nw. You will see all the categories with further instructions there.

April is poetry month!  Mrs. Weening and I are planning a combination Speechfest/Poetryfest to take place coming up in May.  Your child can check with their homeroom teacher for details.  In the meantime, here are some resources for how to have more poetry in your children’s lives.

Women’s History Month

We had a wonderful week last week with our Accelerated Reader celebrations.  Congratulations to all who met their AR goal!  Students had an Olympics theme this week at school, with completing the Reading Olympics Challenge, (winners to be announced at school this week) a theme-dress day as an Olympian or a person from a country in the world, learning about Olympic sports and traditions, and class campfires with delicious treats.

March is Women’s History Month and I have a lot of great resource lists to share with you.  I have a display of books related to this theme in the library at school.  I am encouraging the students to take them out and give them a try- maybe you can remind your children at home as well to try some of these books and learn something new! Wishing everyone a happy March Break- only a few more days to go!

Black History Month

Recently Mrs. Kroezen, Grade 6B, and I hosted a school assembly on the theme of Black History Month.  This year we decided to go with a Canadian Focus.  Black History is Canadian history! As a school we celebrated the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians who have done so much for our country. Enjoy some of these Black History month stories below.
